TEACHING YOUR GUINEA PIG TRICKS.
Before you can start Training your Guinea Pig, you need to gain their trust and get them to eat out of your hand. You will need a food reward (Fresh grass is preferable as they do not get full from one strand of grass) and you can continue to teach them for a while. This can be frustrating but remember to be patient and have fun while teaching your guinea pig tricks!
Teaching Your Guinea Pig Its Name
When ever you approach your guinea pig’s home announce your presence by saying their name. When they come to greet you give them a treat while saying their name again. Call them by them name whenever you feed them a treat and it won’t be long before they will recognize their name as a
“come here” sound and will rush to meet you in the hopes of a tasty treat.
Teach your guinea pig to run in a circle
1 To start this trick, your guinea pig must follow your hand with the treat in it, (not in a circle, but in any direction.) When your guinea pig can follow your
hand for great distances, you are ready for step 2
2 Start doing circular patterns with the treat. Make sure you pick one direction and stick with it. Make sure to re ward your pig with small piece of the treat
for every circle. After a while your guinea pig will expect a circle and wil lbegin doing them more efficiently. As soon as this happens move on to step 3.
3 Assign a key word or phrase to this trick. Every time you want your guinea pig to do a circle, say the exact same word or phrase. You could say “do a circle” or “Turn” or “Circle”. It helps if every now and then you give your guinea pig a treat without making it do a circle. A good time to do this is when they're in their cage - not in the middle of a lesson.
This is the hardest part. It will probably take over 100 circles to get here. Eventually your guinea pig will expect a circle and be able to do them quickly.. When this happens you don't need to make your guinea pig follow your hand for a full circle, just put the treat either to the right or the left of their face (depending on the direction of the circle), say the magic words, and your guinea pig will begin to learn how to do circles without following the treat. Make sure to reward them for every circle. It is important that you never change the
direction of the circle. When teaching your guinea pig to do a circle do not award a treat for a circle in the opposite direction you taught it (even though it is tempting at times) because this is rewarding them for not completing the trick correctly. After the circle is mastered, make sure to practice it often enough so that your guinea pig doesn't forget the trick.
WHEN YOU HAVE MASTERED THIS TRICK THEN YOU CAN TRY TEACHING HIM MORE. REMEMBER TO BE PATIENT AND TO HAVE FUN WHILE TEACHING YOUR GUINEA PIG TRICKS! BE CONSISTANT, TRAIN ABOUT 10-20 MINUTES A DAY.
Teaching your pet to "Beg"
Warning: Don't teach them this trick while you're teaching them "Go around" as this can confuse them
1. Grab a strand of grass and feed your guinea pig to get him/her excited to know food is around.
2. Hold a piece of grass above their head and make sure they notice it.
3. When they try and reach it, say "beg"
4. Slowly over time make the grass strand higher and higher until they have to stand on two legs to reach it.
5. You may want to start by allowing them to rest their two front paws your free hand on.
